Vegetable and fruit production in the Southern Arava region face significant challenges due to yield losses induced by insect pests. In particular, date plantations suffer from insect pests, causing severe damages to the crops and reducing significantly the yield (El-Shafie et al. 2017). While the conventional use of pesticides is limited as the application for date plantations is often not practical, biological pest-control can help significantly decreasing insect pest induced yield losses. Several studies provide evidence that birds can depress abundance of insect pests and hence, significantly increase the yield (Blount et al. 2021; Díaz-Siefer et al. 2022; Tscharntke et al. 2005; Whelan et al. 2008). Seasonal high abundance of migratory songbirds can provide important biological pest-control services to the agricultural site (Blount et al. 2021; Kross et al. 2016) that they may use for stopover, when songbirds land to refuel, rest and recover (Schmaljohann et al. 2022).
The Southern Arava region is located along the eastern migration flyways between Eurasia and Africa used as intercontinental junction by a variety of migratory birds and in high abundance (Shirihai 1996). Particularly during spring migration, a large number of migratory songbirds funnel via the Red Sea coast over the Arava Valley in Southern Israel (Schekler et al. 2022; Shirihai 1996). Moreover, this stopover site is of particular relevance due to the close proximity to a wide ecological barrier en route, the Saharo-Arabian desert belt. Consequently, migratory songbirds concentrate here in spring to refuel after crossing a wide ecological barrier (Schekler et al. 2022; Shirihai 1996). Besides the high importance as migratory route and stopover site for many migratory songbirds, the Southern Arava region is also characterized by its importance for date production and hence, large date plantations are located along the valley. This unique setting makes the study area ideal to address knowledge gaps in our understanding of pest-control services provided by migratory songbirds.

Pesticides in agriculture pose a significant threat to biodiversity. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) aims to enhance habitat quality for beneficial organisms and reducing the needs of pes-ticides. However, little research has focused on incorporating migratory insect eating birds species into IPM strategies. This study investigates if birds and bats contribute significantly to biological pest control, if habitat structures and manipulations can enhance their abundance, species richness and hence control impact and which of these manipulations can be included in farming protocols as tools for farmers.
We investigated whether audio lures can attract migratory insectivorous birds to field crops and date plantations, what factors influence abundance of birds in the crops, whether the birds’ diet include crop-related insect pests, and which bird species are most effective for pest control? This data was collected and analysed by a Master student from Vienna Austria with the help of local field assistants and researchers.

Modern agriculture is one of the world’s largest contributors to global environmental change, yet it also holds significant potential to drive global sustainability (Rockström et al., 2017). The expansion and intensification of agricultural landscapes have led to widespread habitat loss and degradation, resulting in severe declines in biodiversity (Balzan et al., 2016). This decline is primarily driven by the increased use of chemical inputs, such as fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, which reduce the diversity and abundance of natural enemies and pollinators (Rusch et al., 2016). Consequently, critical ecosystem services essential for agricultural production, such as pollination and biological pest control, are compromised (Mei et al., 2021).
Addressing these challenges requires the restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem services within agricultural systems, achievable through practices that enhance key ecological functions like biological pest control and pollination. In recent years, ecological intensification has emerged as a promising strategy to reduce harmful environmental impacts while maintaining agricultural productivity. This approach focuses on enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services by minimizing reliance on external inputs, thereby increasing the sustainability of farming (Garibaldi et al., 2019).

Swallow-wort (Cynanchum acutum L.) is a perennial vine that is mainly associated with wet habitats in Israel, and in the last years, its range has expanded to the date orchards of the Arava valley. Swallow-wort climbing vines can fully cover the date palm and the fruit bunches and hence inhibit their development, reduce yield production, and cause significant economic losses. In this project we investigate the phenology of the vine, the impact of pollination on seed production and rhizome development, and which control methods result in the least vine development. Our main objective is to develop enhanced control methods for swallow-wort based on the knowledge gained, that will be suitable for conventional and organic date orchards. Control options will include combined chemical
and physical methods that are based on a deeper understanding of the weed’s biology, pollination and propagation, and the interconnected human impact (social-ecological approach). New control protocols and a better understanding of the swallow-wort biology and propagation will help to achieve enhanced and sustainable control in agricultural sites.

Abstract
Bats are crucial in suppressing pest arthropods in agroecosystems, contributing vitally to sustainable agriculture. However, the importance of bats in agriculture in extreme environments, such as deserts, has received far less attention. Date palm plantations represent one of the few productive systems in hyper-arid regions. We studied habitat use in an organic date palm plantation in the Arava Valley (Southern Israel) employing acoustic surveys to assess bat activity and foraging behavior. According to our predictions, bats preferentially foraged in the plantation’s most productive areas, with most of the 13 recorded species exhibiting significant activity in older, sheltered plots. Higher wind speeds correlated with decreased foraging across most species, but sheltered habitats often buffered this effect. While species richness remained stable across habitats, according to our prediction, activity levels varied according to habitat type and wind conditions. In general, bat activity increased in old productive plots in the plantation’s core section and decreased elsewhere in response to strong winds. These results highlight the importance of maintaining older productive areas within the interiors of date palm plantations to support bat populations and enhance their pest-suppressing roles. Management strategies should design wind-buffering plantations to protect critical bat foraging areas and provide water sources. As date palm plantations act as "oases" in unproductive landscapes, many bats likely travel significant distances to forage there. Protecting bat habitats on a large scale and prioritizing multiscale conservation is crucial to preserving bats and their ecosystem services.
